What to expect on your first visit

What to expect on your first visit

For standard patients, you will be coming in and getting a breathing test first before your consultation with Dr. Karmakar.

There are a few different types of breathing tests that we conduct in this clinic:

  • Spirometry (20 minutes)

  • Spirometry & FeNO (20 minutes)

  • Full lung function test (40 minutes)

  • Full lung function test with FeNO (40 minutes)

  • 6 minute walking test (30 minutes)

  • Mannitol challenge (10 mins - 1 hour) If you are taking the Mannitol Challenge, please click here to read through the instructions you must follow prior to you coming in.

The purpose of these tests is to see how your lungs are functioning, especially if you have chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD), asthma, emphysema, or even sleep apnoea.

It is quite common for us to ask you to conduct a breathing test even if you have sleep apnoea, and while most patients may find this quite strange, your sleep apnoea is very closely related to how you breathe at rest.

Following on from your breathing test, you will have the consultation with Dr. Karmakar, where he will thoroughly go through your symptoms with the assistance of the breathing test results.

Your first consultation can take up to 1.5 hours (40 minutes for breathing test & up to 50 minutes for initial consultation) and you may have a nasendoscopy performed during the consultation if Dr. Karmakar finds it would be beneficial to your diagnosis, and provided that you give consent.

 Follow-up consultations will take 20 - 40 minutes maximum.
